Description
This memorial located in Skela, a settlement in the territory of the city district Obrenovac, is an immovable piece of heritage as a cultural landmark. The monument was designed by the sculptor Božidar Obradović in November 1951. It marks the site where, on August 15 1941, 56 hostages brought from the Banjica concentration camp were executed and the village burned. The execution was a reprisal for the killing of the military commander of the city of Šabac, who had died in an ambush made by Partisans the day before. The sculptor Božidar Obradović designed the monument in the shape of a sarcophagus, decorated by bronze reliefs depicting the battle and the shooting of hostages. The monument was made in the tradition of Socialist Realism. The tomb where the victims were buried is found beside the monument.
