The Greek writer, revolutionary and national hero, Rigas Feraios, was born in 1757. After the outbreak of the French Revolution, he believed that something similar could happen in the Balkans. Feraios started printing pamphlets in which he contemplated the ideas of the Revolution. He corresponded with Napoleon, and while traveling to Venice to meet him, Feraios was arrested by the Austrian authorities, allies of the Ottoman Empire, which was concerned about the ideas of the French Revolution. Austria handed him over to the Turkish governor of Belgrade, and in 1798 Feraios was imprisoned, tortured and strangled, together with his five associates, in the Nebojša Tower in Belgrade. Their bodies were thrown into the Danube. A street in Belgrade was also named after him.
