Not one but two New Years are celebrated in Belgrade. The Christmas fever starts two or three weeks before December 31, and lasts all the way to January 14, when the Serbian or Orthodox New Year is celebrated. This is an informal, traditional holiday, which marks the beginning of the new year according to the Julian calendar. Serbian New Year thus begins on January 14, because it arrives 13 days later than in the Gregorian calendar.
